This finely engraved brass is unique in that until 1910 it was mounted forty feet up on the outside of the church tower, from where it looked out over the delightful Lincolnshire countryside for over four hundred years.

In the time of King Henry VIII, when the final break with the Church of Rome took place in England, Henry's emissaries travelled the kingdom seeking out and destroying all relics of the famous English Saint. The position of this brass, however, ensured it's safety: as local legend has it, "Henry just did not have a long enough ladder"!

No records exist to indicate who is commemorated by the brass but from the rivet holes - still visible by the tower clock - he was depicted as a small figure kneeling at the feet of, and being blessed by, the Archbishop

Anne was the daughter of sir Thomas Bullen of Hever in Kent. Her elder sister, Mary, was Henry VIII's mistress in about 1520, and Anne owed much to her swift rise to favour at Court to her sister.

As lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine, Anne caught the eye of Henry, who became infatuated by her dark beauty and winning wiles. But she had no intention of becoming just another of his mistresses and this gave impetus to Henry's plans to obtain a divorce from Atherine of Aragon. In his pursuit of a male heir he married Anne in 1533 and she bore him a daughter, Elizabeth (later to become Elizabeth I).

But after she miscarried of a boy child, her failure to produce a male heir and the plotting of her enemies led to her fall from favour and eventual execution on a charge of adultery.

Coats of Arms came into being when it became necessary for knights in armour to identify themselves to each other, both on the battlefield and at the joust. They carried this identification on their shields, helmets and tabards (loose surcoats).

Later on Knights began to use these coats of arms on seals to 'sign' documents, and they gradually became more decorative. As well as the shield there appeared, on either side, people, animals, or more usually, mythical beasts like the unicorn, dragon and gryphon.

In heraldic terms these beasts are known as 'supporters'. We are familiar with the lion and the unicorn as they are supporters on the Royal Coat of Arms.

Sir Nigel was an officer in the Black Watch whose wife Charlotte was born in India. He was killed in the Boer War in 1899 and this unique brass was laid down during a period when memorial brasses were enjoying a renewed interest. It was the Victorians who started the hobby of brass rubbing. The family descended from Neis Ramsay, principal physician to Alexander II, King of Scotland, who granted him the lands of Bamff which are still in possession of the family. Sir Gilbert Ramsay, Baron of Bamff, one of the descendant of Neis was created a baronet of Nova Scotia for the gallantry of his son James at the Battle of Pentland Hills in 16666.
