Dimensions of whole product (figure may lay within this):

Height in inches: 38

Width in inches: 15

Weight in kg: 5.5

Full Scale, Replica or Theme? Reduced Scale

This finely engraved brass is unique in that until 1910 it was mounted forty feet up on the outside of the church tower, from where it looked out over the delightful Lincolnshire countryside for over four hundred years.

In the time of King Henry VIII, when the final break with the Church of Rome took place in England, Henry's emissaries travelled the kingdom seeking out and destroying all relics of the famous English Saint. The position of this brass, however, ensured it's safety: as local legend has it, "Henry just did not have a long enough ladder"!

No records exist to indicate who is commemorated by the brass but from the rivet holes - still visible by the tower clock - he was depicted as a small figure kneeling at the feet of, and being blessed by, the Archbishop

Anne was the daughter of sir Thomas Bullen of Hever in Kent. Her elder sister, Mary, was Henry VIII's mistress in about 1520, and Anne owed much to her swift rise to favour at Court to her sister.

As lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine, Anne caught the eye of Henry, who became infatuated by her dark beauty and winning wiles. But she had no intention of becoming just another of his mistresses and this gave impetus to Henry's plans to obtain a divorce from Atherine of Aragon. In his pursuit of a male heir he married Anne in 1533 and she bore him a daughter, Elizabeth (later to become Elizabeth I).

But after she miscarried of a boy child, her failure to produce a male heir and the plotting of her enemies led to her fall from favour and eventual execution on a charge of adultery.

John and Lettys Terry

John and Lettys Terry

Price: £262.50 (Excluding VAT at 17.5%)

1524 St John Maddermarket, Norwich

Dimensions of whole product (figure may lay within this):

Height in inches: 38

Width in inches: 29

Weight in kg: 11.0

Full Scale, Replica or Theme? Full Scale

This most unusual and attractive brass shows John, Lettys, their two sons and two daughters all standing upon brackets, the supporting arms of which are in the form of the branches of a tree. It has been assumed that the incorporation of a tree into the design offers a rather awful pun upon the family name "teree"!

The upper coat of arms is that of the City of Norwich (of which John was mayor in 1523), whilst his personal coat is a strange amalgam incorporating the arms of the Mercers of London and the initials I.T. Whilst no records of the Merchant Adventurers have survived, he was certainly not a member of the Mercers Company and had no right to marshal their arms with his own in this way.

Sir Ralph was scion of the Whittingham family, who lived in Pendley Manor from the 14th Century. Three generations of Whittingham were named robert, the first was Sheriff of London in 1419, the second fought in the Hundred Years' War; the third, a Lancastrian, was killed during the Wars of the roses. His daughter Margaret, against his wishes, married the Yorkist, Sir John Verney, whose father, knighted by Edward IV in 1471, became Lord Mayor of London. On Henry VIII's accession, Parliament granted the Whittingham estates to the Verney's. Sir John was buried at Ashridge, as were his son and grandson Ralph, whose brass this is. Ralph and elizabeth his wife are shown with their 9 sons and 3 daughters. The parents wear heraldic tabards showing the Coat of Arms of the Verneys and Whittinghams.

Lady Elizabeth, wife of Sir Ralph, was the daughter of Edmund, Lord Braye. Her heraldic mantle bears her family arms, with those of her husband. This is one of the finest examples of insignia with its story of family links and inter-marriage. Elizabeth outlived her husband and married three more times. The original Verney brass shows her with Sir Ralph, their 9 sons and 3 daughters.

In 1557 Elizabeth's brother John, 2nd Baron Braye, died without issue. The barony was abeyant until 1839 when it was terminated in favour of Sarah Otway, daughter of Sir Thomas Cave and Elizabeth's descendant. The family assumed the name Verney-Cave which is that of the present Baron Braye.

These two brasses are part of a family memorial to their parents (also included in this series) which were originally placed in the Ashridge Church, Sir Edmund Verney, the third son, inherited the Pendley estates from his father, and when in 1575 Ashridge became the property of Henry Lord Cheney, he established the Pendley Chapel in Aldbury Church and brought the memorials of his parents and other members of his family from Ashridge. When Sir Edmund died, his son, finding his inheritance incomplete, sold the Pendley estate and went to the Meditrranean where he "turned Turk" and commanded a privateer.
