The provenance of this brass is obscure. Early in the 19th century it was seen in cologne in the Archdiocesan Museum, only to reappear on the art market as having come from Nippes, now a suburb of Cologne.

The inscription may be translated thus: 'Henry Oskens, Cantor and Canon of this Church, had me made while he was living, pray for him. He died A.D. 1535, the last day of November.'

The finely engraved brass with colour traces remaining was probably made in Cologne, though the inscription has a Flemish influence.

The brass shows Arthur in civilian dress kneeling at a footstool with his wife Sessely kneeling at the other side. The inscription underneath says: 'Neere unto this place lyeth the bodies of Arthur Page of Walter Okeleye in ye parish of Braye and County of berk Gent: who had to wife Sessely Brownesopp Esq: They had issue one son Edward Page. The said Arthur deceased ye XXIII Daye of Decemb aN 1610 & ye said Sesseley dyed ye XIII daye of March an 1598." The brass also shows a babe in a chirsom (white robe of innocence) lying at the foot of the stool. This generally indicates one who died in the first month of his life or died unbaptised

This fine small brass shows Henry in complete plate armour of the Lancastrian period.

Several members of the Paris family are buried in Hildersham church, the latest in 1680. The earliest-Robert de Paris of Carmarthen in Wales, and his wife Alienora, dates from about 1379, Henry Paris was his grandson. Little is known about the Paris family except that they were Lords of the Manor in succession to the Busteler family.

A famous member of the family was Mathew Paris, a 13th Century monk and great historian who lived in the nest door parish of Linton

Margaret, nee Poche, was the wife of Henry Paris. This fine small brass shows her in a veiled headdress with a long mantle over a sleeveless cotehardie, revealing the narrow sleeves of her kirtle and her mittens.

John Penn was a Lord of the Manor. He was 63 years old when this brass was made, showing him with his wife Ursula and their six sons. The original brass was broken, resulting in these half effigies.

Both John and Ursula wear the Elizabethan ruffles made familiar to us all by portraits of that time. Ursula wears a Mary Queen of Scots headdress, and the square neck of her gown is filled by a partlet made of pleated linen.

John's beautifully drawn armour conforms to the current civilian fashion, with tassets lengthened and buckled to the projecting edge of the pointed breast plate. The pauldrons (shoulder pieces) are very large, made of several plates and cut into scalloped edging.

This brass is part of a family memorial which includes their parents, John and Ursula. Unfortunately only the upper halves of these two latter brasses remain. It is interesting to note that unlike other memorial brass depicting sons and daughters with their parents, these six sons are shown not as children but as young men. They wear adult fashions of the period and two of the sons are sporting moustaches and beards

This small and very beautiful brass is part of a family memorial which includes his parents, William and Martha Penn and his two sisters, (another brass in the series). The Church at Penn is very old and well worth a visit. It has been added to over nine centuries and parts of the building include Roman brickwork and Norman flints. Inside the church are many memorials to both ancestors and the descendants of the famous Quaker, William Penn. He was the son of Admiral Sir Wiulliam Penn (1621-1670) and became the most prominent Quaker in England, who devoted himself to good works. Charles II granted him in 1682 the right to found the province known now as Pennsylvania (Penn's Forestland) in payment of a debt owed by the Crown to Admiral Penn.

This delightful brass shows two sisters dressed in the costume of the time of Charles I. The portraits of Van Dyck have made familiar the broad falling collar edged with fine lace, the short vandycked bodice and full sleeves. This brass forms part of a family memorial which also includes their brother (also included in this series) and their parents, William and Martha Penn.

This shield, Penn impaled with stag, forms part of the family memorial to William and Martha Penn. Also, mentioned in the inscription, and included on the Memorial are the effigies of their son and two daughters. These latter brasses, although small, show in great detail the fashions of the period and are included in the series of facsimile brasses.

William and Martha were cousins of the family of Admiral sir william Penn, (1621-70) father of the famous Quaker, William Penn. It was this latter William Penn who in 1682, having obtained a special grant from King Charles II went to America and founded Pennsylvania.

This brass to John Penn shows him in splendid fashions made familiar by the portraits of the king, Charles I. John Penn was a relative of William Penn, the famous Quaker. It was by becoming a member of this despised and persecuted sect that William angered his father, Admiral sir William Penn, for Charles II had intended to raise the elder Penn to peerage, but withheld the honour when he heard the son had become a Quaker. The father's anger was short-lived and his son became the most prominent Quaker in England and the most famous of all the colony builders of America. Charles II granted to him in 1681, in payment of a debt owed by the crown to Admiral Penn, the province of Pennsylvania.

Sarah was the daughter of sir Henry Drury and Lady Susan Stewkley of Mark, in Somerset, and the wife of John Penn. The distinctive engravings of Sarah and John Penn are part of a family memorial which includes their five sons and five daughters (facsimile brasses of all the family are included in this series).

This brass to Sarah is a fine example of mid 17th Century brass engraving. She is shown wearing the elaborate fashions of the time of King Charles I, a broad falling collar, sometimes edged with fine lace. Sarah's is a plain double collar with a short vandyked bodice and full sleeves, and she carries a feather fan.

These charming brasses, much sought after by enthusiasts, show the children of John and Sarah Penn. The family were cousins of the famous Quaker, William Penn (1644 -1718) who founded Pennsylvania. The charm of these brasses lies in the way the engraver shows each child as a separate entity. Note how the youngest son is still wearing long robes, the middle three sons wear knee-breeches, while the eldest son wears very elegant clothes and adult "Cromwellian" boots with spurs. The five daughters wear simple clothes with broad falling collars and vadycked bodices. They are all shown in different poses-in marked contrast to the engraved effigies of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Thomas Peyton held the manors of Wicken and Bernard in Isleham and other lands in Fordham. He profited greatly from the wool trade, at that time the basis of most of England's wealth. The woolsack's place in the House of Lords reminded our forebearers of their priorities. Isleham Church is also a "Wool Church", buildings erected more as personal monuments by families such as the Peytons. Their size is much greater than needed by the communities they served.

The original brass shows Thomas with his two wives under an elaborate canopy. His first wife was Margaret Bernard famous as 'The Lace Lady'

Beneath an ornate canopy the original brass depicts Thomas Peyton with Margaret Bernard, his first wife and Margaret Francis, the second wife on either side?

This finely engraved brass shows Margaret wearing a decollete waisted gown of rich Italian brocade or cut velvet. Her butterfly headdress, fashionable at that time, is worded with the prayer "Lady (Help) Jhu (Jesus) Mercy". Her elaborate necklace is also worn by Margaret Francis and was thought to be a family heirloom but research reveals an identical necklace worn by Isabel Cheyne (Blickling Norfolk, 1495) and this, together with the position of the hands of all three ladies, points to these brasses having come from the same workshop.

Margaret was the daughter and co-heir of Sir Hugh Francis and the widow of Thomas Garnish. Her second husband was Thomas Peyton who held the manors of Wicken and Bernard in Isleham and other lands in Fordham. The Peyton brass, featuring Thomas with his two wives, is probably the best known in the country showing the rich clothes of the period, the jewellery and the unusual placing of the wives hands. Margaret wears a long fur-trimmed gown with a decollete neckline of similar style to that worn by Margaret Bernard, Thomas's first wife (the "LaceLady"). Both wives wear the fashionable "butterfly" headdress.

This early 15th Century brass is part of a family brass which includes his wife Elizabeth and owes much of its charm to the quality of the engraving. The plain simple lines show John wearing complete plate armour of the style in vogue during the Wars of the roses later in the Century (1455-58). The tiny church at Hampton Poyle is well worth a visit. It is so typical of the ancient but continuig rural life with monuments to thos who fought for their country and recordes of priests going back nearly to domesday. Among them is the name of Poyle.

The original brass shows Elizabeth with her husband John. This very early 15th Century brass owes much of its charm to the draughtsmanlike quality of the engraving. Elizabeth wears a simple gown with turned-over collar and full sleeves close to the wrist. She wears the Crespine headdress in which the hair is draped over the head to fall to the shoulders behind. The tiny church at Hampton Poyle contains records of priests going back almost to Domesday. Among them the name Poyle occurs and presumably the hamlet added Poyle to commemorate the family's long association.
