This finely engraved brass is unique in that until 1910 it was mounted forty feet up on the outside of the church tower, from where it looked out over the delightful Lincolnshire countryside for over four hundred years.

In the time of King Henry VIII, when the final break with the Church of Rome took place in England, Henry's emissaries travelled the kingdom seeking out and destroying all relics of the famous English Saint. The position of this brass, however, ensured it's safety: as local legend has it, "Henry just did not have a long enough ladder"!

No records exist to indicate who is commemorated by the brass but from the rivet holes - still visible by the tower clock - he was depicted as a small figure kneeling at the feet of, and being blessed by, the Archbishop

Width in inches: 10

Anne was the daughter of sir Thomas Bullen of Hever in Kent. Her elder sister, Mary, was Henry VIII's mistress in about 1520, and Anne owed much to her swift rise to favour at Court to her sister.

As lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine, Anne caught the eye of Henry, who became infatuated by her dark beauty and winning wiles. But she had no intention of becoming just another of his mistresses and this gave impetus to Henry's plans to obtain a divorce from Atherine of Aragon. In his pursuit of a male heir he married Anne in 1533 and she bore him a daughter, Elizabeth (later to become Elizabeth I).

But after she miscarried of a boy child, her failure to produce a male heir and the plotting of her enemies led to her fall from favour and eventual execution on a charge of adultery.

Towards the end of his life Thomas Golde, together with Sir George Speke, was concerned with one of the Tudor State trials. Both were members of the Grand Jury at Bedminster in 1521 for the indictment of Edward Stafford, duke of Buckingham, who was condemned by Act of Parliament and executed later that year.

It is more usual for a kneeling effigy like this of Thomas Golde to be laid facing a similar one to his wife.

However a single kneeling figure is not unknown. Because he is depicted facing left, the details of his sword belt and dagger can be seen.

Thomas Golde is thought to be related to Sir George Speke but the origins of the family are not fully known.

During the 15th Century it was the custom to engrave shrouded figures and grinning skeletons. This one is without doubt the most gruesome of the shroud brasses. This engraving is thought to be 1510, and as Ralph died later it is therefore probable that he commissioned this brass during his lifetime. Indeed Ralph Hamsterley is unique in that he had at least four brasses made to commemorate himself. One , in academic dress , was formerly in the antechapel at Merton College, others in queens college and University College. Born in Durham he spent most of his life at Oxford. He was a Fellow of Merton, and nominated Warden in 1507. In 1509 he became Master of University College.

Edward Harris M.A was a Fellow of New college, Oxford, and was the first Headmaster of Thame Grammar School, where he remained for thirty years. The school was founded by john, Lord Williams (d. 1559) whose great weath came from profits made from the dissolution of the monastries under Henry VIII. The original school buildings can be seen near the parish church, and a modern school building now carries on the name. The brass depicts Edward, aged 63, kneeling and wearing a ruff and civil mantle.

Little is known of the origins of this brass; what we do know can be deduced from the early style of engraving and history of Blickling Manor. The manor was purchased in 1309 by one of Robert de Holveston, who was succeeded by a James de Holveston, aCollector of Taxes in Norfolk in 1349-50. James and his wife Joan moved into Blickling Manor in 1369 and by the terms of his curious will (published in Norfolk in 1378) if no male heirs the estate would go to Sir Nicholas de Dagworth (another brass in the series). The will mentions but does not name his daughters, though it appears that sir Nicholas de Dagworth married one of them.

Alice, daughter of Sir Thomas Essex of Lambourne, Berkshire, was the wife of William Hyde; they had five sons and five daughters. This brass is notable for the elegance of her dress. She wears the Paris hood, known to most of us as a Mary Queen of Scots headdress . Alice has a frilled partlet around her neck, which later developed into the ruff so typical of Elizabethan fashion. She also wears an embroidered petticoat displayed through the open front of her over-dress.

Alice lived during a very eventful period of history - the beginning of the turbulent reign of Henry VIII and the difficult years before Elizabeth I became Queen in 1558.

This is a rare example of a Flemish brass made with a cut-out effigy and canopy, with a bracket base made in the English style. The original stome and inscription has been lost, but the arms on the base identify it. William held several Royal appointments, which would explain a parish priest having such an important brass.

In 1329 he was sent to David, King of Scotland, to collect 5000 marks due to Edward III. When he retired from Royal service he lived at North Mimms, and requested in his will to be buried in the chancel of the church.

This magnificent example of the engravers' Art is a detail taken from the brass to Marguerite de Scornay, Abbess of Nivelles. It depicts the enthroned Virgin holding the child Jesus, whose hand (on the complete brass) points towards the kneeling Abbess.

It is interesting to note that this brass barely escaped destruction during the German bombing raid on Nivelles in 1940 because the inscription beneath it was split and curled into a cylinder by the intense heat of the fire.

This brass is a heraldic crest on the memorial to Robert and Joan Greyndour. Robert's father, sir John Greyndour, was a great grandson of Sir John Joce, from whom he inherited Newland.

Sir John Greyndour was a member of the households of both Henry IV and V and accompanied Henry V to France in 1415. He took with him a company of 150 forest of Dean Miners. They were instrumental in undermining the walls of the town of Harfleur which later surrendered.

It is thought that in return for this service he was granted the crest of the forest of Dean Miners. The Miner has a pick in his hand with which to loosen the iron ore, and carries a wooden hod on his back. In his mouth he holds a candle.

Newland Church was founded in the reign of King John by a monk of Westminster abbey, Robert de Wakering.
