Width in inches: 15

Weight in kg: 5.5

Full Scale, Replica or Theme? Reduced Scale

This finely engraved brass is unique in that until 1910 it was mounted forty feet up on the outside of the church tower, from where it looked out over the delightful Lincolnshire countryside for over four hundred years.

In the time of King Henry VIII, when the final break with the Church of Rome took place in England, Henry's emissaries travelled the kingdom seeking out and destroying all relics of the famous English Saint. The position of this brass, however, ensured it's safety: as local legend has it, "Henry just did not have a long enough ladder"!

No records exist to indicate who is commemorated by the brass but from the rivet holes - still visible by the tower clock - he was depicted as a small figure kneeling at the feet of, and being blessed by, the Archbishop

Anne was the daughter of sir Thomas Bullen of Hever in Kent. Her elder sister, Mary, was Henry VIII's mistress in about 1520, and Anne owed much to her swift rise to favour at Court to her sister.

As lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine, Anne caught the eye of Henry, who became infatuated by her dark beauty and winning wiles. But she had no intention of becoming just another of his mistresses and this gave impetus to Henry's plans to obtain a divorce from Atherine of Aragon. In his pursuit of a male heir he married Anne in 1533 and she bore him a daughter, Elizabeth (later to become Elizabeth I).

But after she miscarried of a boy child, her failure to produce a male heir and the plotting of her enemies led to her fall from favour and eventual execution on a charge of adultery.

This monumental brass shows Henry in armour of the Early Tudor or Mail Skirt Period (1485-1558), though much of it is covered by the Tabard, an heraldic tunic. This garment, short sleeved and reaching to mid-thigh, bears his arms and was a means of identification in the heat of the battle.

The most notable feature of the brass is the helmet upon which his head rests, which bears the knight's crest of a Saracen's head with heavy oak leaf mantling.

An Esquire of the King's Chamber under Edward III and Richard II, Sir George was knighted when Richard entered Scotland in 1385. In 1382 he was a customer of Great Yarmouth, in 1373 and 1376 Custodian of Hadleigh and Colchester Castles, and in 1389 Justice of the Peace in Suffolk.

Later he was Commissioner of Array to review local militia, and when the duke of Norfolk was exiled in 1398 he was one of the Council to administer his affairs.

When Henry IV became King in 1399, he confirmed the annuities from the Crown previously granted to sir George by Richard II.

Thus he served three English Kings, a unique achievement. The brass shows him in plate armour with a scalloped jupon charged with his arms, sadly the lion's head is lost.

The original of this brass to Sir William is 66" long and illustrates further advances in armour. As well as chain mail Sir Willliam is shown wearing plates of steel strapped to his upper and lower arms. His elbows and shoulders are protected by decorated steel roundels-a feature not seen on earlier brasses. His legs are covered by greaves of plate strapped to his shins. On his feet are sollerets or lames of plate riveted together and strapped over the feet. His shield is of the concave type and is decorated with fleur-de-lys

Richard Fowler is thought to have been the God son of Richard and Sibil Quartermain. The couple were childless, and his effigy is included on their family memorial.

The brasses of both Richard Fowler and Richard Quartermain are similar both in the hair style of the time, and the armour of the Yorkist period. In this the laminated pauldrons of previous styles are replaced or covered by large single plates shaped to the shoulder, often deeply ridged to intercept sword cuts. The elbow-cops become larger until finally they replace the shield altogether.

Sir John wearsarmour of the Camail or Jupon period. His pointed bassinet helmet rests on his tilting helm, a fox's head. His jupon, the sleeveless tunic that covered his body armour, bears his arms, gules (red) 2 bars Or (gold). This tunic helped keep his armour cool and dry, and identified the bearer in battle. He lived during Edward III's reign.

The Foxle family were landowners. Sir John married twice, his first wife Maud was daughter of sir John Brocas of Beaupaire in Hampshire. The second wife was Joan Martin. Sir John's will specified that Maud's brass was to be the more elaborate of the two, indicating her family connections.

Lady Maud was the first wife of Sir John de Foxle, and the daughter of sir John Brocas of Bearepaire in Hampshire. She wears a nebule headdress, in which the hair is gathered into nets that frame the face. Over her kirtle, or long dress, she wears a short sleeved cotehardie with long liripipes hanging from the short sleeves. Heraldic lions, probably embroidered, decorate her splendid cotehardie, while the dress of the second wife, Joan, is plain. The careful distinction is interesting and was specified in Sir John's will, to show that she brought more wealth and influence to the Foxle family than the second wife Joan.

Lady Joan de Foxle, nee Martin, was the second wife of sir John. She is wearing a nebule head-dress in which the hair is gathered into nets that frame the face. She wears, like Sir John's first wife Maud, a short sleeved cotehardie, with long liripipes hanging from them-this was worn over a long dress or kirtle. But, unlike Maud, she is shown with no rich embroidery on her gown, which marks her as the less important of Sir John's two wives. It would seem her family had less wealth and influence than Maud's family. Maud was the daughter of Sir John Brocas of Beaupaire in Hampshire.

The Brocas Trinity is another brass in this series.
