GREENMAN (PAGAN, WICCA) (CLICK HERE) GREENMAN (PAGAN, WICCA) (CLICK HERE)
The ‘Greenman’, the Pagan embodiment of a growing life force, is an ancient concept occurring throughout history and cultures from Ancient Greece to the present day Wicca. He was seen as the irresistible force of nature - weakened and killed by winter and yet born again in springtime.

The Greenman, as he is most commonly seen today - as a stone- or wood-carved image within a church, dates from the flourishing of the elaborate Gothic style of architecture in the late 12th. Century - before these beautifully images of invention and imagination were carved in stone the common man’s images were made of wood and most have not survived.

This was the vernacular spirit - part of the world of the heathen (‘he who worships on the heath’) and the pagan (‘the common man’) although its precise doctrines have not survived: the general populace being illiterate and all their beliefs passed down orally they were eventually lost beneath the written law of the church, which was somewhat biased against the cult of the Greenman.

The church was once a much earthier place, however - with an agrarian congregation more rooted in the seasons than today . A preoccupation with images of growth and fertility were tolerated if not encouraged as a way of reaching out to a superstitious and rural populace. The course and development of religions from their origins in primitive earth and fertility magic to the customs and traditions of the present day are thoroughly documented in Sir James Frazier’s ‘Golden Bough’.

Brass Rubbing Facsimiles and Materials CLICK HEREBrass Rubbing Facsimiles and Materials CLICK HERE
Brass rubbing began in the Victorian era, and has been popular ever since. For details of Brass Rubbing (Including how to make a brass rubbing), see our main Brass Rubbing web site http://www.white-winds.com

With a bit of patience, you can make a magnificent image with it's basis set deep in Britain's heritage.

White Winds is the world's leading supplier of facsimile brasses and Brass Rubbing Materials. Our own heritage goes back to a group of Brass Rubbing enthusiasts in the late '50s, who realised that the growing popularity of brass rubbing was likely to damage original brasses, some of which were many hundreds of years old. Being students of "modern materials", they developed a process for taking perfect mouldings, from which they were able to make facsimiles that are so perfect that they are indistinguishable from the originals. At the same time, they developed formulas for both wax and paper that were ideally suited to the purpose.

Now, all of the original moulds, and the formulas for both the wax and the paper belong to White Winds.

We cannot necessarily answer all questions on the subject of Brass Rubbing (though http://white-winds.com is a good resource), but we can provide any materials that you will need.

Scrimshaw work * * * NEW * * *Scrimshaw work * * * NEW * * *
We are very excited to be trying out a small range of Scrimshaw pieces.

Originally an artform of the Native Americans and Inuit, Scrimshaw was an artform adopted by American Whale hunters during trips sometimes lasting for several years. Sailors on the old whaling ships would while away the hours between life-threatening hunts, by making intricately carved items from the jaw bones, teeth and tusks of their prey.

The fine craftsmanship of the artwork was highlighted by rubbing blacking into the fine etched lines.

Of course, our pieces are NOT made from animal products, in fact, they are individually hand crafted in bonded resin, but still retain the magnificent look, feel and weight of the original pieces.

Celtic BrassesCeltic Brasses
The concept of a Celtic cross started long before Christianity came to the British Isles. The designs date back to carvings in caves. The tall stone markers and stone circles were used in the late Stone Age and early Bronze Age. By the time Christianity arrived on the British Isles, all the artist tools and designs were in place to make the lovely Celtic crosses we enjoy today.

We present a range of brasses made from cold cast resin set on a lifelike wood grained background. These are suitable for brass rubbing and wall decoration. Each brass has a felt backing and an indented 'Euroslot' that protects surfaces while giving a safe and secure method for wall hanging.

These brasses may be used for Brass Rubbing as well as decorative purposes.
